New Standards for Labeling and Compliance of Packaging

Regulation (EU) 2025/40, adopted on December 19, 2024, establishes new standards for packaging and packaging waste management. This regulation, which enters into force on February 11, 2025, brings important changes for producers and consumers.

The main requirements:

The regulation establishes sustainability and labeling requirements for packaging throughout its entire life cycle, including production, use, and waste management.

Packaging labels must contain clear, legible and durable information, applied to the packaging in a visible manner, and this information must be available to consumers before purchase, including in online sales.

• Promoting reuse and recycling
• Reducing unnecessary packaging
• Indicating the composition of materials used
• Providing information regarding the final destination of packaging
• Contributing to the circular economy and climate neutrality by 2050

These standards aim at both simplifying things for consumers—through clear information—and holding producers accountable regarding environmental impact.
